Do Open Tracking and Links Hurt Cold Email Deliverability?
On this page
Short answer
They add risk and tell you little. Google names links as content that makes spam classification more likely, can rate-limit mail by the URL domains it contains, and says low open rates are not an accurate sign of deliverability problems. In cold email, leave out tracking pixels, images and links in the first email, share links after someone replies, and measure replies instead of opens.
What Google says
Three statements from Google's own pages bear on this:
Links raise the spam risk. For the Postmaster Tools delivery error "Email content is possibly spammy," Google's advice is: "Some types of message content, such as Internet links, increase the possibility of messages being treated as spam" (dashboards help).
Link domains have their own rate limit. One variant of Gmail's
421 4.7.28error reads "Gmail has detected an unusual rate of unsolicited email containing one of your URL domains," and the email "with the URL has been temporarily rate limited" (SMTP error reference).Opens are not a deliverability metric. "Google doesn't track open rates," "Google can't verify the accuracy of open rates reported by third parties," and "Low open rates aren't necessarily an accurate indicator of deliverability or spam classification issues" (sender guidelines).
Why tracking is a poor trade in cold email
Open tracking works by adding a tiny image to each email, loaded from a tracking domain. In cold email that costs you in three ways:
It adds an image and a link to every email, including the first one, where your sender has no history with the recipient.
The tracking domain appears in every email you send, so its reputation becomes part of yours; Gmail can rate-limit mail by the domains it links to.
The number is unreliable. Mail apps and privacy features load images automatically, so "opens" include machines. Low opens don't prove spam placement, and high opens don't prove anyone read the email.
You take on deliverability risk for a metric that can't tell you whether you are in the inbox.
Links
No links in the first email. That includes your website in the signature. A bare domain name that mail apps turn into a link counts too.
Share links after a reply. Once a prospect answers, the thread has a history and a link is expected.
Keep links visible and honest when you do send them. Google asks that "Web links in the message body should be visible and easy to understand."
Keep signatures minimal: name, title, company name. Skip logos, photos and banners.
What to measure instead
Instead of | Measure |
|---|---|
Open rate | Human reply rate per mailbox and per campaign |
Click rate | Positive replies and booked meetings per 1,000 emails sent |
Opens as a spam check | Placement tests with a neutral control email; see placement tests |
Opens as a list check | Auto-replies: they show the email reached a working mailbox |
If replies drop while auto-replies hold, the emails are arriving and the list or offer is the issue. If both drop, look at placement. See Gmail sending cold email to spam.
What about unsubscribe links?
An opt-out is different from a tracking link: it lowers complaints. In cold email a plain sentence inviting a reply works. See one-click unsubscribe.
What we recommend at Outreach2day
Turn off open tracking, keep the first email free of links and images, and judge campaigns by replies. We don't guarantee inbox placement; placement tests and per-mailbox warm-up inbox, spam and bounce rates show where you stand.
